Seizure Disorder Patients in the Emergency Department



Abstract
Seizure disorder is a treatable disease, but it is complicated with sequelae in the case of the repeated seizure attack or the longer duration. It is necessary for the seizure patients to treat rapidly and properly. It is more important to find
out the
cause of seizure after the initial seizure. Authours conducted a review of seizure patients who admitted at Youg Dong Severance Hospital through emergency department from April 1983 to Feb 1993.
@ES The results were follows:
@EN 1. The seizure disorder patients was 0.71% of total 210,217 emergency patients.
2. Male to female ratio was 1.5 : 1. The age distribution was highest in under one year (39.0%). Most of patients were under ten years old (86.9%).
3. The febrile convulsion showed highest prevalent rate (52.0%), idiopathic 24.8%, infection 7.0%, cerebeal atrophy, CVD, head injury, metabolic disorder and anatomic anomaly in order.
4. Most of seizure duration was under 20 minutes (79.0%)
5. The patients showed the seiaure attach in emergency department was 32.4%.
6. Status epilepticus was seen in 19.9% of all patients and febrile convulsion was the most common cause (41.3%).
7. Intubation was done in 3.3% and the most common cause was infection (56.3%).
8. Mortality rate was 1.0% and all were originated from the infection.
